DashaAvatara

Dashavatara (Sanskrit: दशावतार, daśāvatāra) refers to the ten avatars of Vishnu, the Hindu God of universal preservation. The paintings are done according to the description given in the Pancaratra. The ten avataras are Matsyamurti, Varahmurti, Kurmamurti, Nrsimhamurti, Vamanamurti, Srirama, Parashurama, Haladhara, Krishna and Kalki.



Matsyamurti

The first incarnation of Vishnu is Matsya Avatara. His Dhyana Mantra is- 

वामे शङ्खं गदां दक्षे द्विभुजो मत्स्यरूपधृत् | 
नराङ्घ्रिर्मत्स्यरूपो वा मत्स्यरूपी जनार्दनः || 

Lord Janardana may have legs like human beings or he may appear fully like a fish. He has two hands in the fish-incarnation. He carries a conch in the left hand and a mace in the right. (Color- White)

Kurmamurti

The second incarnation of Lord Vishnu is Kurmamurti. His Dhyana Mantra is- 

कूर्मस्तु कच्छपाकारॊ मत्स्यरूपोक्तरूपवान् | 

Kurma is in the form of a tortoise and His description is the same as that of Matsyamurti. (Color- Golden)

Varahamurti

The third incarnation of Vishnu is Varahamurti. 

Dhyana Mantra- 
मधुपिङ्गलवर्णं च चतुर्बाह्वायुधैर्वृतम् | 
नराङ्गं सूकरास्यं च मनाक्पीनं सुभीषणम् || 
श्रीर्वामकूर्परस्था च धरानन्तौ पदानुगौ | 
एतद्रूपधरं देवं वराहं भुक्तिमुक्तिदम् || 

One should meditate on Lord Hari in the form of a Boar. His color is reddish brown like honey. He has four hands carrying weapons. His body is human, but the head is that of a boar. He is little fat and very fierce. Goddess Sri is on his left elbow. Earth and Ananta are at His feet. God Varaha, in this form grants both enjoyment and liberation.

Nrsimhamurti

Nrsimhamurti is the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. 

ज्वलदग्निसमाकारं सिंहवक्त्रं नराङ्गकम् |
दंष्ट्राकरालवदनं लोलज्जिह्वासुभीषणम् || 
वृत्तास्यं जटिलं क्रुद्धमालीढं पीनवक्षसम् | 
अभेद्यतीक्ष्णनखरमात्मोरुकृत दानवम् || 
तद्वक्षो दारयन्तं च कराभ्यां नखरैर्भृशम् | 
गदाचक्रधरं द्वाभ्यां नरसिंहं जगत्प्रभुम् || 

One should adore Narasimha, the lord of the world. He is like the burning fire in brightness. He has the face of the lion and the body of a human. His face looks fierce with fangs. He is frightening with a dangling tongue. His face is round and covered with manes. He is angry and sits in a position technically called Alidha. His chest s plump. His nails are unbreakable and sharp. He holds a demon on His thigh and tears his chest with both hands using His nails. He carries a mace and a discus with His other two hands. (White)

Vamanamurti

Vamanamurti is the fifth incarnation of Vishnu. 

Dhyana Mantra- 
कुण्डी छत्रधरो द्वाभ्यां वामनः परिकीर्तितः | 

Vamana is described as carrying a water-pot and an umbrella with His two hands. (Black Color)

Parashurama

Parashurama is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Dhyana Mantra-
क्षत्रान्तकरणं घोरमुद्वहन् परशुं करे |
जामदग्न्यश्च कर्तव्यो रामश्शत्रुनिषूदनः ||

Parashurama, son of Jamadagni, should be represented as carrying an axe which is frightening and able to end the Ksatriya class. He is a destroyer of foes. (Golden Color)

SriRama

Rama is the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. 

Dhyana Mantra- 
युवा प्रसन्नवदनः सिंहस्कन्धोरुणेक्षणः | 
आजानुबाहुः कर्तव्यॊ रामो बाणधनुर्धरः || 

Rama should be represented as a young man having a calm countenance, Lion shouldered, red-eyed and long-armed. He carries a bow and an arrow.

Haladhara

 Haladhara is the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Dhyana Mantra-
मद्यपात्रं च सीरं च वामदक्षिणयोः क्रमात् |
गदा मुसलवज्रं च हली रामः प्रकीर्तितः ||

Balarama, the plough carrier, is described as carrying a cup of liquor in His left hand and a plough in his right. In the other pair of hands, He carries a mace and a pastle which acts like a thunder bolt.

Krishna

Krishna is the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. 

Dhyana Mantra- 
शङ्खचक्रधरः श्यामो द्विभुजः कृष्णसंज्ञितः | 

The Lord named Krishna has two hands in which he carries a conch and a discus. He is black in color.

Lord Kalki

The tenth incarnation of Lord Vishnu is Kalki. 

Dhyana Mantra- 
खड्गोद्यतकरः क्रुद्धोः हयारुढो महाबलः | 
म्लेञ्छच्छेदकरः कल्की द्विभुजः परिकीर्तितः || 

Kalki, the annihilator of Mlecchas is described as holding a sward in His raised hand and angry. He is very powerful and rides a horse. He has two hands.
